crab-hawk wasp
Crabhawk (Carcinophilovesperis rex)
Length: Up to 24 cm
Weight: 20 grams
Diet: Adult wasps subsist on flower nectar, young are fed on the flesh of giant crabs.
This oversized wasp is fairly common in the jungles and around the chasms of Skull Island. Related to the Tarantula Hawk, the females seek out and kill land crabs of different sizes, which they shell and tear into smaller pieces, in order to feed their brood of grubs. A female may nurse up to 3-4 grubs at a time, in separate holes dug in locations spread over its territory, it will routinely drop large chunks of crab meat for them to consume until they are ready to pupate. The sting of the female is mostly used to kill food for its babies, but is also used defensively, being extremely painful.
